Concrete contractor services in Boston, MA
Ironset Boston Concrete Construction is a concrete contractor in Boston, MA, and many calls start with a slab that's cracked, sinking or holding water. We build driveways, patios and retaining walls that deal with the cause. Price follows the size, the digging and the base, the schedule follows permits and weather, and the quote I write on site spells out your job.
Concrete driveway building
We dig out the old driveway, pack a firm base and pour a new one with control joints, cuts that give cracks a planned place to go.

Want room for a grill and a table out back? We build patios sloped away from the house, so rain runs off instead of pooling by the wall.

Stamped concrete is pressed with patterns while it's still wet, so a patio, walk or pool deck can look like stone or brick without setting each piece.

Heaved or broken walk tripping people up? We replace sidewalks and front walks for homes and rental buildings, with a broom finish, a brushed texture for grip.

We pour garage floors for the cars and gear you keep there over a packed base, so the weight sits on firm ground, not loose fill.

Plain gray not what you pictured? Decorative concrete adds color, patterns and textured finishes to a patio, walk or driveway, built on the same packed base underneath.

When a wall leans or holds water behind it, the drainage usually failed first. We build concrete retaining walls with a way for that water to get out.

We pour interior concrete floors for basements, shops and commercial spaces, set level over a packed subgrade, the ground the slab sits on.

A pool deck has to stay grippy when wet and shed splash water away from the pool, so we slope it and finish it for bare feet.

We form and pour new concrete steps for entries and porches, reinforced with rebar, steel bars inside that help hold it together if it cracks.

Building an addition, garage or shed? We pour slab foundations on a dug-out, packed base, because a slab is only as steady as the ground under it.

We dig, form and pour foundations for new homes and additions, footings and walls included, and check where water will run before the dirt goes back in.

For property managers and business owners, we build concrete parking lots with the thickness and drainage to handle daily traffic and snow plows.

Footings are the concrete pads under a deck post, porch or wall that spread its weight into firm ground. We dig them to the depth your job requires.

Is a corner of the house or a slab sinking? We raise it back toward level and support it, after finding out what let the ground underneath settle.

A Boston concrete contractor that starts with what's underneath
I started Ironset Boston Concrete Construction in 2023 after years of patching steps, walks and slabs on rental buildings around Boston for a property management company. I kept asking why they broke down, and the answer was usually the base or the drainage. We're licensed and fully insured, and you can read more about us.
We work across Boston and the cities around it, mostly for homeowners, small landlords and property managers. The quickest way to start is a call to (617) 226-2081 any day of the week, or a note through our contact page.
Why people call Ironset in Boston
Most concrete fails from the ground up, so I spend the first visit on what's under and around your slab, not just its surface. I'd rather explain a tricky problem plainly and get it right than hand you a quick number.
We find why the old slab failed
Before we pour, I look at the base, the drainage and where the water runs, so you aren't paying for the same crack twice.
The person who quotes it answers
I look at your job and write the estimate myself, then work alongside our crew on the pour, so your questions go to someone who knows the site.
Quotes that show what's underneath
Our quotes list the digging, base and drainage along with the finish, so you can compare contractors on the parts that decide how long concrete lasts.

How to get your concrete estimate
I keep the estimate simple because the useful part is the visit, where I can see the ground, the slope and the old concrete. It's free, on site and there's no pressure to book.

Questions about concrete in Boston
How much does a new concrete driveway cost in Boston?
It depends on the size, how much old concrete has to come out and how much digging and base your ground needs, so I put a number on it only after seeing the site. Thickness, rebar and a stamped or colored finish raise it, and a plain broom finish keeps it lower.
Is it cheaper to repair cracked concrete or replace it?
Repair is cheaper when the crack is only on the surface and the ground under it is solid. If the slab is sinking or keeps cracking in the same spots, the base or drainage has usually failed, and a patch on top usually won't hold. I'll tell you which one you've got before you spend anything.
How long until I can drive on a new concrete driveway?
That depends on the mix and the weather, and I'll tell you when it's safe to walk and drive on your slab before we pour. Curing, the time new concrete needs to harden, runs slower in cold weather, and driving on it too early is a common way edges chip and crack.
Does a concrete contractor need to be registered in Massachusetts?
For work on an existing owner-occupied home with one to four units, the state requires Home Improvement Contractor registration. Certain projects also need oversight from a licensed construction supervisor, which is a separate license and doesn't stand in for that registration. We're licensed and fully insured.
What happens if the ground under my old concrete turns out to be bad?
We stop and show you what we found before anything new goes down, because some problems can't be seen until the old slab is out. Soft fill, buried debris or water running toward the house all change what the base needs, and I explain the fix in plain words.
Do you guarantee your concrete work?
Our work is satisfaction guaranteed. Concrete can still crack as it shrinks and the seasons change, so we cut control joints to steer those cracks into straight lines and build the base so the slab has firm ground under it.
What matters most when building a concrete patio or driveway?
The base under the slab matters more than the finish on top. It's buried on day one, so it's often the first thing cut to save money, and it's the last thing I'd cut, because a slab only holds up as well as the ground under it. In hot weather we also pour early, since a slab that dries too fast at midday can end up with a weak, dusty top.
Do I need a permit for concrete work in Boston?
It depends on the job, and the city's Inspectional Services Department is the office that issues building permits and can tell you. A Short-Form Permit may be needed for minor repairs or for opening up a wall, and a Long-Form Permit covers work that changes a building's structure or use. Work shouldn't start until the permit is issued, since the city can charge double the permit cost. When a job needs one, we help line it up first.
